The Art of Hand-Bound Storytelling: Discovering Zone6

Hand-bound books, honest stories and photography as evidence: Meet publishing house, Zone6. The design and book-making studio is putting narrative-driven documentary photography at the front of its print runs.. As a bookbinder, Johnny McMullan (founder of Zone6) typically produces publications entirely by hand. At his independent press in London, he finds that this always allows for “freedom both in terms of creativity and experimentation.”

Zone6's unique approach to publishing is built around the concept of storytelling through images. By combining striking photographs with carefully crafted narratives, the studio creates a immersive experience for readers. From intimate portraits to sweeping landscapes, each image is chosen with precision to convey a deeper message about the human condition. This careful curation process enables Zone6 to push the boundaries of conventional publishing.

For McMullan, the art of hand-binding is not just about creating physical books, but also about preserving the essence of the story within. The tactile experience of holding a handmade book allows readers to connect with the narrative on a deeper level. As a result, Zone6's publications have gained a loyal following among readers and photographers alike, who appreciate the studio's commitment to pushing the art of storytelling forward. By merging photography, narrative, and hand-crafted design, Zone6 is redefining the possibilities of print publishing in today's digital age.
