For Kefan Shi, every creative project begins with curiosity and ends with a smile. Born in Shanghai and now based between New York and New Jersey, the freelance designer and illustrator has built a practice defined by optimism, flexibility, and a distinctly playful touch. Whether collaborating with brands like the Washington Capitals, WWF, Longines, Humans MCR, or Gotham Park, Kefan approaches each brief as an opportunity to tell stories that are fun, inclusive, and brimming with imagination.
Kefan’s artistic journey began in his childhood fascination with manga and anime. “I’ve always loved their bold visuals and the way they tell stories with humor and energy,” he says. That early influence, paired with the dramatic storytelling traditions of Chinese art, shaped his visual sensibilities. Traditional Chinese painting—with its grand, sweeping narratives—still echoes through his work today, both in obvious motifs and subtle design decisions.
After earning his MFA in Illustration Practice from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2023, Kefan worked as a brand designer and illustrator at Welcome to Chinatown. The role deepened his understanding of how to merge illustration with motion design, user experience, and strategic thinking. He has since transitioned fully into freelance work, giving him the freedom to explore projects across industries and formats.
While manga and traditional Chinese art remain core inspirations, Kefan’s creative spark is constantly fed by his surroundings. Having lived in two of the world’s most dynamic cities—Shanghai and New York—he thrives on the rhythm of urban life.
“I love wandering down interesting streets, visiting galleries, exploring shops, and just watching people pass by, imagining where they’re headed.”
Kefan’s artistic heroes include Hieronymus Bosch, whose fantastical, densely detailed worlds resonate with Kefan’s own love for whimsy and layered storytelling.
Kefan describes his work as fun visuals that are positive, inclusive, and playful. His strength lies in weaving together diverse creative perspectives, ensuring that each project not only catches the eye but also carries a story worth telling.
For him, creativity is an evolving playground—one where skill, curiosity, and optimism are just as important as technical expertise.
“I learned a lot at art school, but also through real-world projects and teaching myself things after graduating.”
As he continues to expand his portfolio, Kefan remains committed to that open-minded approach, proving that design can be both deeply meaningful and joyfully lighthearted.
